How do we actually read stories on it?

Straight from the projector, no phone needed. Open the Google Play Store on the projector itself and install a kids' reading app — Epic!, Kindle, Google Play Books, or Libby if you borrow from your local library. Sign in, open a book, and it projects onto the wall or ceiling from the device itself. Nothing else needed.

Or mirror from your phone or tablet. Screen-mirror over Wi-Fi, or connect by HDMI cable, and whatever's on your phone appears on the wall. Handy if your child's books are already on your tablet, or if you'd rather pick the story on a small screen and let the wall do the showing.

Two things that make it easier at bedtime. Turn the font size up in the reading app — you're reading from across the room, not from your lap, and the difference is bigger than you'd expect. And use the focus and keystone adjustment to square the image up and sharpen the text, especially when you tilt it up at the ceiling.
